GCHEG as we know it today was actually started in the early 1970’s as an informal networking group for young administrators that met in local hospitals and had an annual dinner meeting. The group was formalized as the Metrolina Young Administrators Group in Charlotte, NC in the early 1980’s. The group was formally recognized as an ACHE chapter grew as more folks from various aspects of healthcare joined the organization. In the early 1990’s, the group’s name evolved into the Metrolina Healthcare Executive Forum because many member were no longer so "young". No longer just an organization for hospital executives, the organization grew its membership to include physician practice managers, insurance agents, recruitment firms and suppliers. Dinner and a speaker was a mainstay of the group. The group floundered in the late 1990’s and by 2001 was in need of revitalization and a new name. GCHEG was selected as the name in 2003 because it encompassed the Charlotte area and surrounding region. Record member levels and a variety of monthly scheduled events now have GCHEG poised to become one of the premiere ACHE affiliate chapters in the nation.
