Traditionally mariachi bands consist of 5 musicians wearing ‘charro’ suits. If you haven’t already heard the song “La Cucaracha” (the cockroach!) then you probably will at some stage of your Mexico travels, as it is played by mariachi bands everywhere – on the street and in restaurants. The traditions and customs of the Mexican people are varied and diverse. They are proud of their native heritage and each region has its own cultural practices and celebrations. Many of the ancient traditions of their ancestors have been preserved making it a fascinating destination to explore.

The 1970s marked the first decade in which a gender shift occurred in Mexican migration. During this time, more single women and more families began to migrate along with the working males who had already been migrating for several decades. This difference in gender migration is largely attributed to the difference in Latino and Latina work opportunities in the United States. Prior to the 1970s, the majority of the Latino migratory work was agriculturally based.

Latinas are much more nuanced and less sanitized than pundits, marketers and producers would like to convince you. Here are just seven of the damaging lies about Latina women common in American society today. If you were to accept everything you heard about Latinas, you might think they were scheming and hypersexual, yet socially conservative women whose “equal educational opportunities” and “competitive purchasing power” signify their “arrival.” Just as with other identity groups, these myths are more often than not perpetuated by the media, helped along by heavy-handed, stereotypical or just plain inaccurate depictions spread widely through television programs, popular music and film. I spent two years living fully nomadic, mostly traveling solo, and meeting people through social media.

Non-citizen Latinos often avoid hospitals and clinics for fear of deportation, leading to an increased risk of preventable diseases such as tuberculosis and Hepatitis in this population. Additionally, Latino health deteriorates as this population assimilates into unhealthy lifestyles associated with lower socioeconomic American populations. While the primary reason for immigration into the United States for Latinas is economic improvement, the betterment of family life remains an important factor. Latina women also migrate with their families in an effort to seek refuge from violence and political instability in their native countries. Violent events in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras the number of Latinas entering the United States with families has nearly doubled in 2015.

But take it from the girl who went to UCLA and would always be told “yeah, but you don’t count as Mexican” , that people perceive Latinos to be professionally challenged. Cultural limitations include getting married too young, having children out of wedlock, and having parents that don’t want them to leave their hometown. There are so many other socio-economic obstacles that must be over-come by Latina women. On that note, people will assume she’s not educated or skilled.

The term “Hispanic” has been the source of several debates in the USA. Instead, the OMB has decided that the term should be “Hispanic or Latino” because regional usage of the terms differs. Hispanic is commonly used in the eastern portion of the United States, whereas Latino is commonly used in the western portion of the United States. Since the 2000 Census, the identifier has changed from “Hispanic” to “Spanish/Hispanic/Latino”.

The Affordable Care Act does not cover non-citizens nor does it cover immigrants with less than 5 years of residency. As a result, Latino immigrants struggle to gain health care once they enter the United States.

The film, the fourth highest-rated Disney Channel original movie, premiered to 8.5 million viewers. Lovato’s debut studio album, Don’t Forget, was released on September 23, 2008, and was met with generally positive reviews from critics. Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly said, “Demi Lovato might satisfy her ‘tween fans but she won’t be winning any rockers over with Don’t Forget”. The album debuted at number two in the US, with first-week sales of 89,000 copies. Demetria Devonne Lovato was born on August 20, 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Dianna De La Garza (née Lee Smith) and engineer and musician Patrick Martin Lovato.

Hispanic women earn the least in apprenticeship programs compared to all other groups by racial, ethnic, and gender breakdown. Policymakers who oversee apprenticeship registrations can both encourage increased equity in current apprenticeships, as well as expanded apprenticeships into new industries and occupations.
